Welcome to Wine Season
01 Sep, 15
Raise a glass and toast this wonderful time of year, because September is the beginning of Wine Season!
We know wine is great all year long, so what makes September so special?
This is when grape harvesting begins, lasting through October for certain varietals. While there are many
important steps in the process of winemaking, the harvest may be the most important part. Harvesting
grapes at just the right time is crucial, so growers must know exactly when the grapes are at the perfect
stage of ripeness to be picked.
While machines have taken over the crushing or “stomping” of the grapes, many wine grapes are still
picked by hand to minimize accidental crushing and ensure the highest quality. The harvesting often
begins in the middle of the night, though, when the grapes are coolest. If you want to see them in action,
you may have to visit in the very early morning.
Watching the process unfold can be a magical experience, which is why Wine Season is the perfect time
to visit wine country. If you want to plan a vacation, staying in wine country is not only beautiful this
time of year, but it will also provide you the opportunity to witness part of the process of winemaking.
Visit vineyards to see how the grapes are grown, or check out a winery for a tasting of their best whites
and reds.
Wines harvested in September include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. If
these are some of your favorites, then now’s the time to check out some wineries and see just how
they’re made!
Cheers to a wonderful Wine Season!
