Do You Have to Work on Memorial Day?
24 May, 16
Most people enjoy a 3-day weekend to celebrate Memorial Day—and it’s great to have a day off to spend with friends and family. But what if your business stays open on Memorial Day?
Although most employees have a paid day off, more than 40% of companies still require at least some employees to work on Memorial Day, according to a study by Bloomberg. In addition, 13% will have professional employees working, and 12% will have managers there. So if you find yourself having to work on Memorial Day, know that you’re not alone!
Still, if you’re a manager or an employee who needs to be at work on the holiday, it can feel disappointing. But there are ways to have fun and enjoy it, even while at work! Here are some ideas:
- Give everyone a break to go watch the local Memorial Day parade. Chances are it won’t take too much time out of the day, and it will give everyone the opportunity to feel part of the day’s festivities.
- Give employees “thank you” gifts for coming into work on a day that most others have off. Bonus points if the gift is patriotic!
- Treat everyone to a picnic lunch—even better if the managers grill it up themselves. And make sure everyone takes the time to socialize before going back to work.
- Don’t forget to decorate! Jazzing up the office can lift everyone’s mood!
If you or your team has to come to work on Memorial Day, then it’s important to let them know how much you appreciate them. Obviously a great way to show this is by offering extra pay, but a personal thank you is heartfelt and will be met with gratitude and positivity.
