National Blueberry Month
09 Jul, 19
July is National Blueberry Month, and there’s a lot to celebrate about this superfood. Aside from the tart flavor punch they add to fruit salads and baked goods, blueberries are low in calories and packed with antioxidants—in fact, it’s the antioxidant pigment anthocyanin that gives them their deep blue color. Vitamin C and fiber are plentiful in these nutrition powerhouses, as is manganese, which aids in bone development and the conversion of carbohydrates into energy.
But that’s not all—did you know blueberries are good for your dog, too? Unlike some fruits, such as grapes, which are good for people but can harm canines, blueberries benefit dogs’ health in many of the same ways they benefit ours: attacking free radicals to fight cancer and age-related diseases, improving brain and vision function, and promoting urinary tract health. Choose fresh or frozen for maximum benefits, and be sure to introduce them slowly into your dog’s diet.
This July, enjoy blueberries by tossing a handful in a smoothie, layering them with yogurt and strawberries in a parfait, or—for a decadent summer treat—pairing them with tangy lemon in a buttery fruit crisp. And don’t forget to save a few for Fido!
