Happy Thanksgiving! According to Gallup polls, last year Thanksgiving was rated as the happiest day of 2014. As a day generally free of stress and worry, it’s been one of the top three happiest days for Americans every year since 2008. But what makes us so happy on Thanksgiving?

Food

Eating well is a must on Thanksgiving! Throughout history, holidays have revolved around feasting and the joys of good food. It’s no surprise, then, that eating a wonderful, satisfying, and delicious meal can leave us feeling content. America’s favorite Thanksgiving foods include ham, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, pie, and of course turkey!

Traditions

The number one tradition for Thanksgiving is spending time with family and friends. Good food and good company really do make for the best holidays. But there are a few other traditions that also help make Thanksgiving a fun and relaxing day. Most people will do at least one of two things: watch football or watch holiday parades. Another favorite tradition that leaves many people filled with positive energy is volunteering.

Gratitude

Of course, one of Thanksgiving’s best traditions is sharing what you’re thankful for. Sure, great food, great company, and tried-and-true traditions are bound to leave us feeling good, but numerous studies have shown the powerful effects of practicing gratitude and how it can make you happier. Maybe this is why Thanksgiving beat out other favorite holidays like Christmas and July 4th as the happiest day of the year!

However you celebrate, we hope you have a delicious, fun, and most of all HAPPY Thanksgiving!
