Popcorn has been enjoyed for hundreds of years--and for good reason: it’s delicious and crunchy, and there’s nothing like that satisfying pop of the kernels. At this time of year, you’re bound to see one of those large, decorated tins that hold a trifecta of popcorn in butter, caramel, and cheddar flavors. People love this salty and crunchy snack, and there’s a long history behind it.

 

The first time popping corn caught global attention was at the 1893 World’s Fair, when Charles Cretors, a confectioner from Illinois, brought his popper machine and enticed the crowds with the smell of buttery popcorn. Although we currently associate this smell with movie theaters, popcorn wasn’t sold at the movies until the Great Depression, when theaters discovered that they could increase their profits--and stay afloat--by selling concessions. Popcorn was both cheap to make, and cheap to purchase, so it became a staple.
