There are many different ways to brew coffee around the world far beyond the Starbucks mochawochaccino wizardry. While most of us are amazed at the number of coffee based beverages today’s baristas need to master, they still depend on expensive equipment.

On the other side of the world coffee cultures have been getting along fine with coffee beans, boiling water, and a sock, a tubular sock to be exact.  Malaysians have been using this extraordinarily simple method for years and the process is equally as easy. Here’s how.

Step 1 – Set your sock (filter) in a large container (mug or carafe)

Step 2 – Add your coffee grounds and nearly boiling water to the sock

Step 3 – Let brew for 5 minutes.

Step 4 – Remove the sock (with the grounds) from your mug and let the coffee drip into the cup

Step 5 – Add hot water to your cup to dilute if necessary. Add sugar, milk, or cream to your taste preference.

Voila! Coffee from a sock. Now we don’t recommend you try this with your gym socks, but it’s definitely worth trying something new.
