There’s nothing like eating outside—out in the fresh air, the sunshine, and enjoying nature while also enjoying your favorite picnic foods. Is it any wonder, then, that when summer rolls around we have a whole month to celebrate the joy of eating outdoors?

July is National Picnic Month for good reason. The favorite day to barbecue and eat outside for most Americans is the 4th of July, and with the weather so warm into the evening this month, there are tons of other opportunities to enjoy a picnic, too!

Here are some essentials that will transform your picnic from a haphazard snack in the grass to a perfect Sunday afternoon event:

Food

Whatever you choose, remember that it should be easy to eat and hopefully not too messy! Sandwiches, chips and finger foods are the simplest option, but who doesn’t love pasta salad on a hot day? Avoid things with too much sauce, and especially food with mayonnaise because it can go bad quickly!  Of course you don't want to forget dessert!  Just grab one of our gift boxes to bring along, our Redwoods Gift Box has something for everyone!

Drinks

Bottled water and soda will please everyone, but if the adult crowd wants something special, don’t forget the beer and wine. You’ll need bags of ice also, no matter what drinks you choose. No one wants to drink lukewarm water or tepid soda!

Utensils

Did you remember the pasta salad but forget the forks? Rookie mistake; plastic forks, knives, and spoons are a must, along with disposable cups and plates. Even when you choose the least messy meal, you’re going to want napkins as well. And if you brought wine and beer, definitely don’t forget the corkscrew and bottle opener…

Extras

I’ll call these “extras” but they’re really necessities. You need a comfortable blanket to sit on (trust me: your pants, and grass stains, will thank me later!) and a picnic basket and cooler to keep the food and drinks in. And here’s something you may not have considered: entertainment! Once you’re done eating, what do you do? Bring a Frisbee, beachball, boombox, or something else for a bit of fun!
