Rum Pickled Sailor
15 Aug, 17
Tomorrow, August 16th is National Rum Day and in honor of this fine spirit, we figured we would let you know a little more about it. One of the most versatile spirits is also one of the oldest, more specifically the oldest branded spirit to have ever been made.
From humble beginnings recorded as early as the 1620’s and even earlier hints of a similar drink dating back to the 14th century, rum has had an interesting and fabled life.
Ever heard of “Nelson’s Blood”? There’s a British legend that tells the story of Admiral Horatio Nelson who was killed in the Battle of Trafalgar. Upon the British victory his body was sealed in a cask of rum for safe transport back to England. On arrival, the body was removed and under closer inspection a hole was found in the cask, which meant the sailors had been drinking the rum.
We don’t know about the rest of you, but our tastes are more suited to a pina colada or a spiked rum coffee. Actually, I think I might grab some coffee and make one right now.
