In the early 20th century, peanut butter was less a suburban staple more haute cuisine. Snooty establishments like New York's Vanity Fair Tea Room served up peanut butter and watercress sandwiches, and the cookbooks of the day endorsed plenty of peanut butter pairings, including pimentos and chili.
