8-lucky-foods-for-new-years
23 Dec, 14
Everyone wants to start off the new year right—through making resolutions or following good-luck rituals. But the best way to kick off New Year’s is by picking the right food! Eat these foods on December 31st, and you might find yourself with a prosperous year ahead.
Grapes
In Spain, it is tradition to eat twelve grapes at midnight, each one representing a different month in the coming year. There’s a trick, though: you must swallow all of the grapes before the last stroke of midnight to ensure good luck for the whole year!
Pomegranate
When pomegranates are broken open, they look like a human heart, symbolizing life, fertility, and health. The more seeds you find inside, the more money you are destined to have in the new year!
Cooked Greens
Sure, collards, kale, and cabbage are good for you, but more importantly, when cooked they tend to look like money. Eating these in the hopes of improving one’s fortune is a New Year’s tradition followed in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States.
Legumes
Another dish considered lucky for its resemblance to money, legumes are a chosen to represent coins and wealth. The Italians eat lentils, the Japanese eat black beans, and in the Southern U.S., black-eyed peas are cooked into a dish called Hoppin’ John.
Cornbread
This golden-hued side is another symbol of prosperity—even better if it has corn kernels in it! Those golden nuggets are a sure sign of wealth to come!
Fish
Fish has a long tradition of being a feast food and, in particular, a New Year’s Eve dish. Cod, herring, and carp are the most popular choices. The Japanese eat shrimp for long life, sardines for good harvest, and herring roe for fertility.
Pork
Roast sucking pig is a popular dish during the holidays and New Year’s. The rich fat content symbolizes prosperity in the coming year.
Round Foods
This includes doughnuts, bagels, cakes, or any other sweet treat with a round or ring shape. The round shape signifies the cyclical nature of time and the smooth progress into the new year. Sometimes, coins are baked into cakes, and whoever finds the coin is guaranteed good fortune.
Whatever tradition you choose to uphold on New Year’s Eve, we wish you health and prosperity. See if you can squeeze all these dishes into your day, and you may just end up having your luckiest year ever!
